A Global career
I have just spent the second seat of my training contract in HFW's Melbourne office. In Melbourne I have worked on shipping and construction matters but the focus has been on high-value insurance disputes. This work has included high levels of responsibility and lots of client contact on smaller cases but also working together with a large team on a complex insurance matter worth billions of dollars.
There's not much the Melbourne office doesn't have; spectacular views, great people and an amazing array of cafés, restaurants bars all in close proximity. The office is also equipped with its very own beer fridge which facilitates lively after-work drinks every Friday. Outside the office there's plenty of culture to experience with numerous festivals and sporting events throughout the year. I've particularly enjoyed seeing the cream of the international comedy scene at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Aussie rules football has also been an unexpected highlight although exactly what the rules are remains a mystery to me.
HFW also has offices in Perth and Sydney which work together with Melbourne to provide training, share work and advise on any local state law issues. Australia's federal system adds an extra dimension to legal research because the unique laws of each state need to be taken into account as well as overarching national legislation. I have really enjoyed getting to grips with the idiosyncrasies of Australian law.
