Royce Li

Associate, Aerospace, Singapore

After studying for my law degree, I joined the Army as an interpretation officer and stayed there for over three years. With this job, I managed to travel around the world, working with people from different cultural backgrounds. I wanted to continue doing this in my career in law and therefore, it was a natural choice for me to apply to HFW which stood out as an expert in matters with an international dimension.

My first seat was spent in the Aerospace. This involved conducting discrete research tasks, drafting instructions to counsel and reports to insurers, attending court hearings, and assisting with a major e-disclosure exercise. I was given greater responsibilities to manage smaller matters which involved liaising directly with clients and the other sides' solicitors. The hard work was balanced with team drinks in the office every two weeks, which provided good opportunities to bond and share a more casual conversation with everyone ranging from the support staff to the Partners.

I did my second seat in Singapore, focusing on a mixture of offshore litigation and aviation finance. Being in a relatively smaller office meant that I enjoyed more substantial contact with the Partners and was able to undertake much higher level tasks in addition to doing the standard work often allocated to Trainees. I also had plenty of time to enjoy what Singapore had to offer outside of work, such as going to watch the Singapore Grand Prix, exploring Southeast Asia, and enjoying the endless array of dishes from around the world in hawker centres.

My third seat was in Ship Finance. The work was challenging due to the complex nature of the cases but I learnt a significant amount within a short space of time. It was truly satisfying to be involved in cases from the moment of receiving initial instructions from the clients right through to closure of transactions. My fourth and final seat was in Shipping Litigation.

I qualified in the Aviation Finance team in HFW's Singapore office in March 2019. I work predominantly with financiers, lessors and operators in aviation but also work with the aerospace dispute team in advising on elements of contract and tort law. I was drawn to the global nature of the Aerospace industry and felt that Singapore would be an ideal place to start as one of the biggest transport hub of the Asia-Pacific region. I have not been disappointed so far and remain excited for what is to come!
