A Global career

Margarita Kato

I have just completed my final seat in Singapore where I was in the Corporate team of the Energy department. Although I was in Corporate, other teams approached me when I had capacity and so I was able to do some Shipping and Aerospace work as well.

The majority of my seat was spent working on a major mining acquisition deal where we had to work closely with our Dubai and Sao Paulo office as well as with London and Melbourne. I assisted with due diligence and was responsible for reviewing documents, liaising with local counsel and managing and tracking the numerous requests for further information that were on-going for several months.

I was also given a high level of responsibility dealing with a potential dispute regarding a transfer of a loan facility by a major regional bank. It was a very interesting matter and I was able to attend all client meetings and conference calls and liaise directly with the clients and counsel. It’s common in international offices to be given a high level of responsibility and my experience has been consistent with that.

Singapore as a city to live in is great. It’s extremely safe and the quality of life is amazing. The Trainee flat is a 10-minute walk from the office and has a pool similar to that of a 5-star hotel. There are dozens of Trainees from other law firms and so there are plenty of people to explore Singapore with – as well as the rest of SE Asia.
