A Global career
I spent the second seat of my training contract in the Shipping litigation department of HFW's Singapore office. Working within a small team, I was given a lot of responsibility from day one. Specific highlights include drafting claim submissions for a high-value dispute, being actively involved in settlement negotiations and attending multiple client events with clients from countries varying from China to India. I also worked with the Energy & Resources and Commodities teams, which enhanced my understanding of the work done by HFW Singapore across various practice areas and industry sectors.
With my work visa, flights and accommodation all arranged by HFW, I settled in effortlessly. As a city, Singapore has a lot to offer: bustling hawker centres yet also luxurious rooftop bars; impressive modern attractions such as Gardens by the Bay yet also traditional colonial-era architecture.
On a professional level, my time in Singapore allowed me to better understand the workings of the Singaporean legal system. More than that, I gained first-hand experience of HFW's "multiple offices-one firm" culture. On a personal level, my Singapore secondment allowed me to travel in South East Asia, discover a new passion for Muay Thai(!) and make lifelong friendships.
Spending six months in Singapore as a trainee was a truly unforgettable professional as well as personal life experience.
