A Global career

Alex Walley

I have just completed my second seat in the Perth office. The Perth office has recently relocated to a prime location overlooking the Swan River – it offers unrivalled views. The office currently has 17 fee earners; however, due to the reputation of HFW in Perth and a growing client base this figure has been rising during my 6 month stay here. The current fee earners span a number of industry sectors including: Shipping, Construction and Energy. The team has both contentious and transactional capabilities. Fortunately, I have been able to get involved with contentious and transactional work spanning these three industry sectors during my time in Perth. This has resulted in a diverse work load which has proved equally interesting and challenging.

Examples of work I have been involved with include: the drafting of electricity power plans for remote areas of Western Australia, an LNG jetty construction dispute and a high-profile personal injury claim widely considered to constitute an important test case.

This variety of work has allowed me to further enhance the technical legal skills which I had begun to develop during my first seat. Additionally, working in an international office has given me a greater appreciation of the global commercial environment within which many of HFW's clients operate.

Outside of work, Perth has lived up to its international reputation as being one of the world's most liveable cities. With seemingly endless sunshine, great beaches and outdoor pursuits it has provided for a really enjoyable lifestyle. Besides Perth, Western Australia has a lot to offer. Popular destinations include the Margaret River surf and wine region and the coral coast where I was lucky enough to swim with the largest fish in the ocean (whale sharks).
